Here’s my latest addition to the Australian vocab list I’m building onsite here. As always, any Aussies out there may feel free to contribute a word or phrase that Australian Dads are likely to use.

E is for -

  • Esky - a portable cooling case, mainly used for beer, picnic lunches and … beer.

F is for -

  • fair dinkum - true, real, authentic, genuine, the real deal, the real McCoy.
  • Footy - aerial ping pong, Australian Rules football, sometimes Rugby League. Aussies use the term to refer to their local code.

G is for -

  • G’day or Gidday - Good day to you sir or madam, hello.
  • grouse! -awesome, cool!, fantastic.
  • Good on ya! - An Australian blessing, encouragement, compliment, benediction and (occasionally when used with a sarcastic tone-of-voice) disparagement.

So, I reckon you’re fair dinkum grouse for reading this. Good on ya & I hope you’re lucky enough to be taking an esky full of cold ones to the footy.

I guess I’ll have to rename my blog as Fair Dinkum?

That’d be an interesting move for you! Would probably build your community in Australia … and just confuse the rest of the wrld!

    Thx for visiting Captain Genuine.

Pete, you’ll absolutely need to develop the accect too. The words just aren’t the same without the lovely musical accent.!

Lol, good point. The first lesson in developing the Auusie accent is to clamp your teeth together a la Clint Eastwood, pronounce the words as far back in your mouth as you can, then blend as many vowels and consonants together as you can.

You can practise on the words above.
Maybe we’ll get a podcast up and running for inflection lessons?
