We last left our Aussie Alphabet at the letter L. That must mean it’s time for …
M
- Macca’s - our affectionate name for McDonalds. Often Australians with a surname beginning with Mac are also called Macca.
- Mate - friend, buddy. Note: the meaning of the term is affected by tone of voice and context. For instance, “Good to see you mate” = “Good to see you, my friend” while “Pull your head in mate!” = “Desist that activity you fool!”. [Mate! can also replace expletives when you're hot or hit your thumb with a hammer.]
- Milk Bar - corner store like a convenience store.
- Mozzie - mosquito.

I’m know to a few as Mrs Macca or Mrs Mac (having married a Macca)! Here are a few more M’s for you -
motza, mangled, and moron.

Ah yes, motzah - a lot of anything (”You’ll make a motzah” = make a lot of $$)
Mangled - a tangled mess (Leah’s example to me was “Your VCR gets mangled when the kids put bread into it”)
Moron - well, a normal English word that Aussies enjoy and use often affectionately toward each other, often disparagingly.
Thanks Leah, I mean, Macca!

Yes we Aussies like a good moron - our sporting stars get called this when then make that tactical error; the politicians get called it …. well all the time really; and our mates get called it when they make a comment about their wives looking anything but beautiful
Thanks mate!

These are great. I think I may need a separate Aussie ABCs page on this site when this is all over.
