Mad Cow recently posted on the subject of literality. Her post even contains violence, so it’s a good read for us males. This was my comment on her post:
I get what you say about literality. I love the word. I have to warn you: this gets worse as they get older and gets melded to the smart-arse gene if they carry one, like mine do.
“Oh you want me to hop to it, Dad? Ok.” (Slowly hops to room)
“What’s that Mum? You want me to be kind. Kind of what?”
“I can’t give you five, Dad. I don’t have any wrapping paper” (?!)
“No I won’t answer you Mum, you told me before to be quiet.”
How does literality show up in your home?

Hmm - the “peck on the cheek” did it for me!
My DH is a good one for this (although this could also fall under “Dad Jokes”)
“How far away is dinner?”
“Oh, about 5 foot!”
(Yes, hilarious, I know! *roll eyes*)
Hmmm, I get a bit of the opposite in my house…
“Where are your shoes?”
“Well, you just told me to get dressed for school. You didn’t say put my shoes on. So, you should tell me if you want me to put them on.”

I’m thinking of getting the little drumroll sound effect and carrying it around on an MP3 player to play every time they drop one of these … and when they do it to be annoying.
Maybe I can out-annoy them!

It reminds me of that 80’s movie (a throwback to the “beach movies” of the 60s. It actually starred Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon as parents. Their son, a bit of a rebel, wanted to be called “Knife” as his cool nickname. Frankie wouldn’t let it slide.
“Nice? You want to be called Nice?”
“It’s not Nice! It’s not Nice!”

Out-annoy?….Don’t know if it’s possible. I have found it’s possible to out-embarass them. Early childhood photos and stories are great for this.

@ Jonathan: Ah, the ultimate weapon in the parental arsenal!
@ Shane: glad to have you with us, bro. Frankie Avalon as a Dad? [shudder!]

I can out-annoy anyone at 20 paces. Picture a gun-fight at the OK corral scenario, but instead of guns, it’s annoyances… I win every time…
…my kids have no chance - I literally am the king of literality. “I will fight them on the beaches, I will fight them…”

Hehehehehehe
Hmm, see, I just wonder (as a Mum) whether we’re getting back into the realm of Dad Jokes with that one
As for out-embarrass…. hmmm, I don’t think I have a photo of my kids that they want ANYONE to see - mwahahahahahahahaha *evil laugh*

I agree that literality is definitely in the realm of Dad jokes. Now that both the kids are “adults” my wonderful husband just keeps the the world of literality revolving in our household.
Now wait a minute ….. is there a link here between the Dad’s jokes and the kids literality? Am I wrong or do I detect that it mainly the male children that are young literal princes practising to be king of the Dad Jokes at some later stage?

Oh dear. Leah, I think you’re on to something there.

Definitely something a “little funny” going on here Mad Cow. Maybe we have found the plans for male world domination of bad jokes.
