Folks, it’s school holidays here in Melbourne Australia, so my writing has been kind of light on. We’re also about to head off on a 3 day vacation, so I won’t be posting during that time. I know you’ll miss me, so I’ll leave you with a new “thread”, a discussion point you can all “kick around” while I’m gone.
This new thread will run for a few weeks, where I’ll ask you to tell us what’s worse out of a list of choices. So, here’s the first installment…
When it comes to these fictional characters…
Who’s worse? Which of the following irritates you the most? (And why?)
- Jar Jar Binks
- Tweety bird
- Big Bird
- Tellytubbies
- Jim Carrey (what’s that? You’re telling me he’s real?!)

My first thought was ” how can I only have to choose 1?” and the second thought was everything except for the birds. As to why, well they are just annoying …..
like fingers on the blackboard annoying, or
high pitched whiny voices annoying, or
trying to work while the kids are home annoying.

Of course the answer is Jar Jar Binks, how could it be anything else?

With you all the way, Kathryn, he’s got my vote.

Jar Jar, hands down, because he’s badly written and unnecessary. Why Lucas never hired a screen writer, I don’t know. I suspect it’s because of ego. Or maybe he couldn’t afford it. Do you realize the line, “I have a bad feeling about this is in EVERY Star Wars episode?” It was funny in episode 1, but I was 8.

So far, I have been fortunate enough to avoid the teletubbies, so I can’t give them the vote. Another way to look at this is, which one would you least like to be locked in a room with?
Jar jar would be pacified pretty easily.
Big Bird is rather mellow.
Tweety would be content just to swing in his cage.
I have been fortuante to avoid the teletubbies, so I don’t really know what their capable of doing.
But, Jim Carey…you can’t turn the guy off or shut him up. So, I would have to give my vote to Jim

You people are all too cynical for your own good! What about the positive qualities of all 5 fictional characters? They all have them - look deeper, look at who they really are…
…and Jar-Jar sucks it big time, no question. I’m with Joe. Jar-Jar is the Episode 1 equivalent of the Ewoks, and Lucas’s ego is the ONLY thing that stopped the story being decent. Jim Carrey is actually quite a good actor, and pretty funny to boot. Everyone has their “bad film moments”. Comedy actors just have more.
At least Ep3 saved his hide. This means the two darkest episodes of Star wars (5 & 3) are by far the best ones. Ep5 shines because Lucas didn’t direct, and the imagery is just so powerful. A black shadowy Darth Vader standing in the carbon freezing chamber on a background of blue with only his lightsaber as a contrasting colour… BRILLIANT!
That, and “Luke… I… am your father…”. I use that almost weekly to my son.

Argh! As soon as I saw Jim Carey I didn’t bother to look at the others.
Not only do I not find him funny, be he is exactly the same in every movie! He has no talent at all, and absolutely no versatility and he just annoys the hell out of me. Overbearing and obnoxious comes to mind ..
Whoops, off high horse now.
Can’t stand him, um, just in case you’d missed that point.

…Tell us what you really think, MadCow…

So far, I think Carrey’s coming a close second to Jar Jar. That’s not going to be good for his ego…
Alllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllrighty then!
(I’m a big fan Mr Carrey. Really I am)

Hmm…I will go ahead and put it out there…I liked Jar Jar Binks - he made me laugh in an otherwise heavy, overly social commentary laden movie.
Jim Carey is my least favorite of the list - except for “Bruce Almighty.” Liked that one.
Can’t believe Barney didn’t make the list - he’s worse that Carey. And I am not a little mermaid fan either.

In retrospect I can’t believe Barney didn’t make the list either! This is probably because I saw him once when Oldest Son was an infant … and determined my kids would never see him lest they become attached and I’d have to endure years of that annoying voice and cloying sweetness…
Now we just enjoy the Simpsons’ making fun of him.
And right back to Leah at the top of the comments tree here: “trying to work while the kids are home annoying” - just got it - yes the last 2 weeks (of school holidays) did a have a few moments that were like being caged up with two creatures that are a cross between Jar Jar Binks, the Tasmanian Devil and Jim Carrey…
