Long trips. In the car. With the kids. Hot day. Sound like fun? No? Well, my friend, you need some games.
Rich emailed me this awesome list of car games recently. Click the link for the full list.
Here’s just one of them:
String Figures: You wouldn’t think a simple piece of string could keep a kid entertained for hours, but in some cases it can. Pack a piece of string or yarn tied into a circle for your child and challenge them to learn to make string shapes like Jacob’s Ladder, Kitty Whiskers or to play Cat’s Cradle. If you don’t know much about string games, you can check out a book from the library or print out some instructions from a string game website.

Ah, its times like this that I SO wish that I had a normal family.
*sigh*
There are some great ideas in there though - they left off my fave though. Take a pillow, so you can wrap it around your face, cover your ears (to stop the noise from the back seat) and scream into it really loudly.

That’s what I’ve been doing wrong! I forgot the pillow!

I am so angry with myself… I had crafted a spectacular response remembering our family car trips that kept us entertained by playing “I spy/I saw”, but my computer exploded and I lost it.
The punchline was that at the time my baby sister who was 3 and learning her alphabet (and always had a turn, to be included), ALWAYS picked a random letter, and ALWAYS her answer was an elephant. Always.
Can you tell that I remember it fondly, but am oh so bitter about it. Who sees an elephant in Australia on a family car trip!??!

pahahahahahaha - we did a long car trip - and 3yo at the time had:
“I spell wif my little I somefiiiiiiing ginigig “signs”"
The answer - along the Hume Hwy somewhere remote between Sydney and Melb, and after 20 mins of trying to guess - was ……
Meer Cats!!!!!!!
?????????
I feel your ‘elephant’ pain.

Two hilarious stories! We play the number plate game a lot, you know where you makes up a phrase from the letters on someone’s plate.
There seems to be an unwritten rule that F always stands for fart, B always stands for butt/buttocks/bum, and S is always stinks/stinky.

Ah, yes, the good old Stinky Fart Bum game!
(you have boys don’t you Pete? I feel your pain)
Hmm, we also had, from 5yo, the I Spy answer for several hundred k was always “pigs bum” or variations of….

Actually, no pain with that game, I enjoy it as much as they do. The word “buttocks” is still funny no matter how many times you say it…
Thats an interesting version of I SPY, though…
