“You know what I hate? Men who sing like women. It’s a disgrace!”
Thus spake Oldest Son today in the car. (I think he was listening to Mika at the time)

I agree with him!

See, 11yo doesn’t know everything. He has an opinion, and that’s cool. These blokes have or do sing like women sometimes (for example):
- Freddie Mercury
- Elton John
- Gary Cherone (Extreme/Van Halen)
- Darren Hayes
Not wanting to be blunt - they were/are all very talented dudes who make an awful lot of money.
Cool to not like them, but be careful - Mika could end up being the next thing he’s singing when it’s back on the radio in 10 years time as a”classic”.

Cherone and Mercury = cool
Others? Hmm, I’m raising one eyebrow at ya, Spock-style.
I would add to your list Getty Lee of Rush, Jon Anderson of Yes, even Jimmy Page. Their higher registers make the music powerful.
It wasn’t my editorial (although I agree with my son about Mika).
(Hope he never sings a Mika song)

Jimmy Page - what am I doing!!?? I meant Robert Plant! Duh!

Men, like Plant, are hitting high notes, a falseto so to speak, but there is no mistaking him for a woman singing. He doesn’t sound like a woman, he sounds like a man singing in a high voice.
I (regrettably) clicked on the Mika link. Mika, sounds like a woman. I think your eleven year old made a very astute comment. Dudes that sound like women are a disgrace.

Good distinction, Jonathan, thanks.
