Well, it’s funny. I was planning to do a celebratory post today, but my feelings got in the way. You see, my boys went back to school today after fully EIGHT WEEKS of school holidays! And I have been so looking forward to it.
[see A Day in the Life of a Work-from-home Dad during School Holidays to tap into just some of my pain].
As much I love them, there’s stuff I just have to do as a business-owner and it’s been tough to plan it let alone action it for the last 2 months…
…so here I was - all ready to whoop it up. Then it hit me…
My eldest son starts High School today.
That once-babe-in-arms who vomited on the teenage girl at church, that little blondehaired tearaway who once theorized that time gets into clocks through a pipe at the back, that kid who used to willingly listen to Winnie-the-Pooh stories complete with Dad’s silly voices. He’s a High Schooler.
I’ve come over all nostalgic.
I’d love to write one of those informative posts where you give your own tips for helping your kid to adjust to High School or to a new school. I may still do that.
But right now… I’m just a mess of pride, nostalgia and surprise!
He’s a bloody high schooler, for goodness sake!

Next thing you know he’ll be asking for the car keys and taking girls out on dates. BEWARE!!!!

I was amused the other day as an 18 year old girl flirted with him at the library, obviously thinking he must be about 15 (he IS tall). It went completely over his head and I sighed a deep sigh of relief.

My daughter’s first high school year hasn’t been too bad. She’s had a couple of boyfriends-no dates yet-just boyfriends. They talk on the phone a few times, talk on-line all the time, and then break up. I keep telling her that she can’t consider herself dating someone until she actually goes out on a date. But…perhaps hanging out on myspace for an evening is considered a date. Seems like a fellow gets off pretty cheap these days.

Especially when you can send a bunch of “flowers” or buy her a “drink” on Facebook … for nothing.

Aw Pete - what a wonderfully great and horrid time. You have my big congrats and total sympathy

Thanks April, I’m still coming to terms with it, though the biggest struggle now is find a way to either reduce the number of books in his backpack (it must way half as much as he does) or convince a new school to do away with the bags they order and get trolley-bags so the kids don’t have to lug them on their poor now-bent spines.

Pete, you are such a dad!!
Congrats on you both making it this far, and whilst mine are still a long way off (or not that long - eek!) you have my empathy!
