The One that Got Away

June 25th, 2008 · 11 Comments

For those who followed the story of our near brush with fame and fortune,  I present the advertisement my youngest son and I missed out on starring roles in.

Fortunately for Youngest Son, the budding actor, he has landed an ensemble role in a local production of Oliver. After his first audition, they asked him to try out for the role of Oliver himself, not a small thing for a boy of 8. As they say, he missed it by that much, but is just totally stoked he got into the play and is LOVING rehearsals.

From little things, big things grow…

That was a quick turn around from casting to release. They were fools not to cast the two of you.

Someday, I’ll be able to say, I knew Pete (a.k.a. Buck Rogers or was it Gandalf?) before he became a superstar.

If they hired you for this role, Pete, it’d be typecasting.

    ;)

    Love those national government initiatives.

I’ve been auditioning for some ads myself (my agents have finally been trying to get me some work, although it is sporadic). Will have to do what you’ve done and list ‘em once they’re out and cling nobly to the fact that, like you, I was too good for them…

Jonathan, you can say that right now.

Molk, I feel like inserting a Basil Brush “boom boom” there!

And the idea of a Shadow Resume works for me: “These are the jobs I nearly got…”

Soooo you would have gotten your very own mutton chops?

Alas no, I’d probably have been the last guy because they had asked me to shave my hair short if I got the role.

My husband pointed this ad out to me the other day. We like the message it sends… that cycle effect. Your son is far better off with “Oliver” than that ad however. Not much acting needed for this ad but Oliver will be a great stepping stone for him. I think it all worked out for the best!

Thanks Danielle. In terms of acting and gaining confidence, absolutely.

Congrats to your son! Glad he is following his dreams.
The Get Smart movie just came out! We’ll go see it soon.

YAY to son! Well done, matey :)

Hmm, would love to have seen you with mutton chops. Then I could have pointed and laughed.

Wonder if they will ever run a campaign on “your kids abosorb your TV’s advertising messages” …

Just a thought (I have the occasionally)

    @ Katy: thanks sis!

@ Mad Cow: if you saw me even without mutton chops you’d probably point and laugh. that actually happened to me in an outback town in Malaysia where all the shop assistants ran over to point and laugh at the tall (admittedly long-haired back then) white man with shorts that showed off his hairy legs. This was just after a little girl saw me, screamed and ran off for her mum.

I didn’t buy anything from that shop.
