Given the monumental success of my last lot of ten-word movie reviews (thanks to the two or three people
who read them), I thought I would do some more. Here’s four of my recent views, reviewed…
- WILD HOGS - Laugh-out-loud funny; Gay Cop unsuitable for kids though.
- THE DARK KNIGHT - Ledger, legend! Sinister, mean, complex and violent - this film rocks!
- V FOR VENDETTA - (Where’s Hugo?) Loved the story; but definitely not for kids!
- BENCHWARMERS - Best vehicle I’ve seen for slapstick, fart jokes and idiocy.

McGinley gives new meaning to character Dr. Cox.
Ledger raises bar for movie villains. Wins best prize for magic trick.
Hugo brings inspiration to the William Tell Overture.
Heder brings new meaning to macaroni.
Okay, so none of them are ten-words, what do you expect I’m at work.

Sin City - crap, crap , crap ,crap, crap, crap, crap, crap, and crap.

Danielle, tell us what really think.
Thanks for warning me off.
Big J, hope the new school year is working out well. Love your reviews and who’s counting anyway? I totally loved V and even if Hugh wasn’t in the suit (which it’s rumoured he wasn’t for much of the shooting of the film), his vocal work is outstanding.

To borrow a page from Danielle’s book.
Open Water- crap, crap, crap, crap, crap, crap, and crap.
I don’t think any other movie will ever amount to such a bitter and enraging disappointment as that film. How dare someone present a film as a survival movie based on true events and then in the end they didn’t survive.
How dare lead us on for two hours when the only actual event that they might possibly be accurate on is the fact that they missed the boat. The movie should have ended when the boat got back to the docks and they discovered the two were missing. The Captain could be talking to the first mate:
Captain: “Are you telling me that you left two people out alone? In open water!”
First Mate: (camera zooms in on face-first mate shrugs) “Oops. I did it again… ” (Wah-wah muses plays)
Camera fades out and Porky Pig appears: “That’s all folks” fade to black
So, Pete, have you gone through and counted all the “5’s and “V’s” in the film?

Err. the fives in “V for Vendetta” not Open Water… well I guess you could go through Open Water and count them all if you could stomach that tripe.

KungFu Panda - Haven’t seen it, I hear it’s really, really, really good.
Do you think Dark Knight is ok for children?
Pete // Aug 13, 2008 at 7:47 am
Katy - probably not. I took my kids, and wished I hadn’t brought the younger one (8 years old). I think for children 12 and above, as long as you talked through some of the themes and events, it’s ok (and depending on the kid too).
Jonathan, I watched “V” with my oldest son and spent most of the movie cringing at the level of swearing and violence (and apologising to him for it - “It’s ok, dad. I’m ok.”), so I probably missed a lot of the subtlety in it. Have to watch it again by myself. (I also fastforwarded a whole portion)
And yes, Open Water … you know the Director knows he’s producing a piece of crap when there’s a minute of casual and totally pointless (to the story) of full frontal female nudity in the early part of the film. That and the fact the movie doesn’t even make it to feature length time (I think it ran 80 minutes) … and thank the Lord for that; 80 minutes was 80 minutes too long.

Oh, Kungfu Panda. I didn’t see it. My wife hated it. The boys came back from it fairly underwhelmed, with one of those “it was ok” non-comittal comments. Sounds like they put the best bits (and the entire plot) in the cinema trailers over here in Oz, and spoiled the movie.

Oh, one more comment. In “V for Vendetta”, the nicest thing about it was actually seeing Natalie Portman act. It was a first for her.
jonathan // Aug 14, 2008 at 1:16 am
Ouch, for Natalie Portman. Have you seen “The Professional” or “Beautiful Girls?”
themolk // Aug 14, 2008 at 11:15 am
I wouldn’t say what NP did in “V for Vendetta” was acting. I think if she was to scrape her knee, sawdust would be left behind.
“The Dark Knight” has it hands down with Ledger as the best bad guy I’ve ever seen. The magic trick had me open mouthed and cringing for 5 mintues - just incredible. I’m with you that it’s not a kids film… no way.
Can’t wait to see “The Clone Wars” next Tuesday night - WOO HOO!

O Pippengered One, I hath not seen either of them. Maybe I will now. I’ve basically seen her in the 3 Star Wars movies which her acting dragged down (tho’ it may also have been Lucas’ bizarre editing out of some of her better scenes - see the DVD extras for that one)… some film she made with the guy from Scrubs and a couple of other titles that were so unimpressive I’ can’t even remember their names.
Sir Molk, I really think she did well (but nice joke tho’). With you 100% on Ledger as #1 Villain.
Me? I’m lookin’ forward to Tropic Thunder!!!!

I loved The Dark Knight - the magic trick was pretty funny…
Was I the only one who laughed when the Mafia dude was dropped off the fire escape? Seriously…I laughed…I was the only one in the theater laughing. My friends were looking at me and laughing *at* me in horror…
