New Dads

February 5, 2008

We’re moving house later this year and in preparation, I’ve been digging through old stuff, boxing things up and turfing (throwing away) things I don’t want any more.

Amongst the good stuff I uncovered (recovered?) was notes on parenting I’d taken fromĀ  other people’s writing some time ago. I’ve long since lost the details of who actually wrote these things (and I do attribute them to someone else), but I liked them at the time and copied them down. On rereading them, I still like them…

I offer them to any New Dads surfing through this site. I’ll post them as bullet lists over the next couple o’ days…

Some ChildProofing You Can Do When You’re Expecting Your First Child:

  • Childproof before your child learns to crawl
  • Crawl around the house on all fours to see where the hazards are
  • You can acutally life without ANY poisons in the house – just get rid of them all
  • Keep nothing under the sink but pots and pans
  • Replace all your glassware with high quality plasticware
  • You cannot childproof once and for all. As your kid gets more mobile, the hazards will be different.
  • If there is anything in your house you couldn’t stand being destroyed, make sure it is inaccessible or put it in storage for the duration!

Hi Pete! All good tips. My boy has been crawling for months and is now on the verge of walking. So he is now not only getting into stuff on the floor, but also things like the toilet, or on the end tables, in cabinets and drawers. You are right! I am always moving something up higher or into a different spot to keep him safe. Childproofing is a neverending task. :D

I think my parents actually set traps to make me wiser…and have more scars.

My son has moved from walking to climbing. Its seems the higher we move things, the more interesting they become to him. I’m thinking, the only way to keep things safe from him and him safe from them is to remove all furniture and items from the house.

That’s weird Pete. I just put up a post about how non-baby-proofed our house really is. It’s far less helpful and serious than yours though. Good tips…don’t look to mine for tips…;)

@ Jared:… and then when they get to 11, you start really childproofing TV viewing … even the commercials… and the friends … Do you think I’m starting to micromanage? (Welcome aboard, love your blog!)

@ Bill: You know this means we all have to go look at yours now. I just went for a read and it’s hilarious.

@jonathan (all lower case): ever see The Boy in the Bubble? Food for thought, huh?

@ Bryan: Traps. Damn, why didn’t I think of that? I wonder if it’s too late to start that…

Great tips for those who are expecting to become a daddy.. It’s important that you have to make sure that your child is safe from any danger.
