What’s worse?

1. The smell of old cigarette smoke that’s soaked into upholstery or clothes
2. That first wiff that tells you baby did a whoopsy
3. The aroma of way-too-much perfume or deoderant on the body of a person who lost their sense of smell years ago

So what annoys you more?

waiters that put your knapkin on your lap as if you can’t do it for yourself

or

the sound that other people make when they’re eating

Wednesday’s What’s Worse?

Yeah, it’s petty. Yeah, it’s negative. But heck – we all love to gripe about stuff. And I find plenty to gripe about in my normal life and now that I’ve been sick for going on eleven days, I’m in a particularly negative mood…

So once again, I thought I’d share a couple of my pet peeves and get your thoughts on which (if either) you find worse. So, what’s worse?

• plastic coffee lids that seem tailor-made to dribbling coffee onto your shirt or pants?
• salespeople and cashiers who put the notes in your hand first THEN the coin; or
• getting a phone call right in the middle of your favourite TV show?

[Can I add another one just for me? That moment when the phone HAS rung in the middle of dinner or that favourite TV show, you ask your wife to leave it, she answers it then says "It's for you". . . Ok, ok, I'll take it up with her...]

So, what’s worse?

Getting a song stuck in your head when it’s a song you don’t really like

or

When you have two lanes, a car in each both doing the exact same speed and you can’t pass

Tough choice I know.

Wednesday’s What’s Yours : “The Essential” list

Ever picked up a “best of” album, looked at the back cover and said, “What?! That’s so NOT best of!!”?

The past few years, I keep getting nostalgic for 80s music – must be getting old, I guess -and I’ll be wandering through a store, see a CD with title like “Essential 80s” and grab it up excitedly, only to be perplexed and disappointed with the compilers’ choices.

Usually you get a mix of Men Without Hats (puh-leez!), Culture Club (yes, George, I do want to hurt you),  Kim Wilde (I think I just vomited into my mouth), Peter Blakeley (he’s on one I saw yesterday – remember Crying in the Chapel? Tell me THAT belongs on a compilation), Scritti Politi (I said “who?” too), Mel & Kim … and even Kajagoogoo (try saying that 3 times fast!).

Essential 80s?! I think not!

When I think of 80s music, I think of songs that were not just novelties but had depth, intelligence and … well … they reached inside your gut and twisted it either with their dark edge or their sense of joy.

So here’s MY CD, were I the compiler. These are all bands that lasted many many albums and whose music has remained popular with millions. These are all songs that I can literally listen to over and over without losing interest. These were the soundtrack of my youth … oh … sorry, a cliche slipped out …

Soapboxes: Wednesday’s What’s Worse VIII

So a couple of Aussies are representing us well overseas, I see in the news today (please note my sarcastic tone of voice as I write).  Two Australians have been locked up in San Diego’s Central Jail since their arrest last Thursday. Police accuse the sailors of hitting and kicking their alleged victim, breaking his eye socket, after an argument at a party in San Diego about whether Australian Rules Football was better than American football.

?!

Certainly sounds worth beating someone nearly to death over! (Please note: I’m still being sarcastic!) 

On another note, every Australian both overseas and at home, is well aware we had a Federal Election last weekend with a very interesting change of government as a result. Now for those of you afraid that I will launch into a political rant, that brings me to today’s subject for Wednesday’s What’s Worse: those annoying people who get so worked up over a subject that they are completely obnoxious or worse!

So for you, which of these people would be worse to be cornered by at a party?

• Someone obsessed by sport
• Someone obsessed by politics
• Someone obsessed with their own accomplishments, genius or looks
